The
actual building dates back to 1892 when the remarkable German, Max
Brandmeyer had it built. Being quite taken by the possibilities which
the site offered he bought all of the raw uncultivated area that
included a farmhouse and a stable.
He wished to call it the “Oasi Villa”, a romantic vision of the
site, being the last homestead before reaching the “deserto”.
Dr. Brandmeyer immediately began construction work of the large villa,
at the same time improving the surrounding area by planting fruit
trees – in particular those of apple and pear. The work was completed
in 1896.
The presence of this German tycoon, named by the local inhabitants as
“the blond man”, contributed to the diffusion of the cultivation of
apples amongst the farmers in S.Agata. in fact he had many varieties
planted having them sent from Germany and also taught the local farmers
the various methods of cultivation. They, in turn, using well-timed
grafting techniques produced the so-called “limongella” apple.
At the beginning of the 1900’s it was already the destination of many
illustrious persons, who not only lived but extolled the traditional
cooking.
In Villa Oasi “blonde Max” lived an intense and romantic love story
with Enrichetta a beautiful and charming woman, also a foreigner,
originating from Odessus.
They dedicated themselves to the land and their sentiments until 1921,
when they decided to sell everything and move to their house in Naples.
