Written history about the
“Deserto” begins about three about three thousand ago with
settlement of an italic race the Oscans who settled across the
sorrentine peninsula.
They
lived in Sorrento and the surrounding area before its colonisation by
the Greeks and finally in Deserto.
In fact at the foot of the hill, in “vadabillo”, there is a vast
archaic Necropolis.
Discovered at
the beginning of the 1800’s, the area was subjected to a series of
excavations which have provided important testimonies about the life,
habits and customs of the population which lived in the sorrentine
peninsula.
Many of the
tombs have been raided in remote times whilst others, found untouched,
contained vases and objects of notable value. The famous anciente
historian Karl Beloch defined it as a Greek – Oscan necropolis.
The last excavation, carried out by the monuments office of Naples in
1996 brought interesting objects to the light, which are today on
display in the Villa Fondi museum in Piano di Sorrento. The tombs were
constructed in local grey tuff- stone, hand sculpted in monolithic
blocks with a slate of the same material as the lid. Inside, apart from
human remains, there were various objects which were to serve the dead
in their other life: personal objects, vases, jewels, necklaces and
househpold objects.
Some of the vases found were decorated with the images of the Sirens,
with the head of a woman and the body of a bird.
